My Taurean soul-sister Tracy tagged me on Facebook with a "write down the top 25 songs you cannot live without" meme. Of course, hers went to twice that length, as does this one.
When I started going to "soul oldies" package shows about 20 years ago, I quickly realized that one of the best parts of those revues was watching various older black women suddenly rise from their seats during the first few bars of a particular favorite and testify, "Child, that's MY song!!!" All of these songs below, for whatever reason, bring out the testifying old black woman in me. I've got several thousand "favorite songs," and I'm sure I'm leaving some key ones off here; hell, many of these songs aren't even the "best" ones that the artists in question recorded. But these particular tracks (in stream-of-consciousness order) have always resonated particularly deeply on a head/heart/hips level, with more than a little spiritual and cosmic echo thrown in for good measure. I never get sick of hearing any of these, and none of them ever fail to make me feel like life is worth living... and loving.
Of course, I've since thought of about 50 more that should be on here -- but then again, rock n' roll is supposed to be about spontaneity...1. Bob Dylan — Visions of Johanna
